COVER PICTURE:
The CORONET 9.5mm projector was manufactured in England in the mid 1930s, and
was promoted as a serious competitor to Pathé. The Coronet was unusual in that it used
an intermittent movement for film advance (as per 35mm professional machines).
The advertising of the time described the projector as…
Sprocket driven. Absolutely self-contained. 30, 60 or 400 ft. reels without adjustment. Flickerless
pictures, achieved by the use of accelerated intermittent movement. 1 in. Anastigmat Projection
lens, giving a brilliant picture approximately 36” X 27” at a 10 ft. throw. High geared rewinds for all
films. Combined lamp and wall plug. Fan cooled. Any voltage 100-250. Any current A.C. or D.C.
The intermittent movement was a 10 segment “Maltese cross’ style movement, made of
thin, poor quality material. As a result, very few of these units survive in operational
condition today. Despite the fact that the projector did not have a top feed sprocket, their
advertising assured potential buyers that it was sprocket driven.
The machine also incorporated a holder for the Pathé style 30 and 60 ft. enclosed reels.
Coronet also manufactured a 9.5 mm camera at that time; it also incorporated an
intermittent film drive.
