Another year is almost over, and we are all one year older than this time last year.
So, too are the films and equipment in our collections. The holiday season is a good time
to relax with the family and run a few reels. But don't forget to get those films out and
have a look at them and give them a good sniff for vinegar smell.
Two recent events here remind me of the need to check films on a regular basis.
1 - The weekend after coming home from attending the New Zealand Film Buffs'
meeting in Auckland, I was looking for a reel of film and noticed a brown gooey
substance leaking onto the film cans on the two lower shelves of my film rack. A close
inspection showed that Reel 2 of the Technicolor nitrate print of Coney Island was the
source - a case of nitrate decomposition setting in.
2 -The following weekend, I was putting together a two-hour program for the CATHS
entertainment day program. I decided to run the second 'half of the program in
Cinemascope, as I was adding my Tom & Jerry 'Scope cartoon to the make-up reel, the
acrid smell and the warping of the film became obvious - this time vinegar syndrome -
another loss to my collection.
