PRODUCING A SMALL MAGAZINE
Hobby magazines such as REEL DEALS are run on a break-even basis and any suggestion of a
profit after the production costs plus the printing and mailing expenses are paid is but a dream. Like
others producing similar magazines, I am happy if RD breaks even at the end of the subscription
year, as I believe it fills a need in “Keeping Film Collectors’ in Touch” and hopefully contributes to
keeping our great hobby alive.
There is a level of support (subscription numbers) which is vital to maintain the economics of the
operation. Over the past few years I have been aware of photocopied pages and indeed copies of
the entire magazine being distributed. While I’m sure no malice was intended, providing
photocopies to friends simply means the loss of potential subscriber to the magazine. By all means
show or loan the magazine to your friends, but please encourage them to obtain their own
subscription – after all $15.00 for a subscription is far less than the cost of the average film offered
for sale in RD.

WEB SITE
The REEL DEALS web site has been updated to include a method for renewing or subscribing to
RD. Payments can be made via Paypal or Credit Card – The RD web site is currently being
enlarged to include a sales section, which will offer items that are becoming difficult to source –
things like lamps, belts, reels, splicing materials, etc.

I’m pleased to say the on-line subscriptions are working well – there have been seven new
subscriptions since the start of the year.

IMPORTANT
The next edition of RD (JUNE 2011) will be about 4 weeks
later than usual. M+B will be on holiday in June. See opp.
