REEL DEALS
PUBLISHED BY – MIKE TRICKETT 25 FAIRLIE ST. NTH. GEELONG VIC. 3215
Yet another year is almost over. This year has seen the change to digital projection
in the professional cinema industry really gather pace. Most of the major chains
have now made the move; those that , have their plans will in place. Industry
sources say that by the end of next year, there will be no more 35mm film prints
available, which will no doubt have a flow-on effect to us home cinema enthusiasts.
Of course there are good and bad aspects of this change. For the industry, on-going
operating costs have been reduced. No more freight charges for moving heavy
boxes of film around the country, and no more skilled staff to be paid.
For the projectionists and other industry workers who have given a life time to
entertaining the patrons
tunnel.
The down side for the poor old patron is that if something does go wrong, with no
skilled staff on hand, it can be a case of put up with it, or walk out.
Then again, I wonder if the average cinema knows what a correctly projected
picture should look like. I was recently told by a projectionist that he once forgot
to change the aperture plate & lens and projected a Cinemascope film in widescreen,
with the resultant loss of over half of the picture area – not one complaint! Then
again, with many people watching 4:3 television on a widescreen 16:9 TV, with the
– to expect.
