Too many people think that watching movies is all about the first week end
grosses at the multiplex or an opportunity to be photographed in the foyer
holding a champagne flute. I don't think that and, if you've read this far, you
probably don't either.
The attitude is that movie enthusiasts should skulk off home and look at the
old DVDs that have shown up. Well we don't know how long that will last and
it's no substitute for watching the big screen image in an audience that gasps
at the audacities, laughs with the jokes and may even burst out in
spontaneous applause for the highlights, let alone goes off into the night
reliving the event in a conversation with friends.
The fault lies as much with the movie goers, as it does with incompetent
managements and indifferent organisers. The audiences sit through these
ghastly presentations without complaining. If comparable blunders occurred at
classical music events or pop concerts, the customers would riot.
Anyone who values the movie experience, whether it's Jaws, The Jolson Story
or The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, should take the chance to see them in theatrical
showings and, if someone is sufficiently misguided to put them on in an
inadequate form, find them, tell them so and demand your money back! That
they remember!
