Editor’s Comment

As reported elsewhere in this edition, the CATHS Annual Cine Collectables Fair was
held in Melbourne 14 June 2015. This year there was a good attendance, with lots
on offer and lots of buyers.

It is often reported, that film is on the way out, if not finished in may people’s
mind. Yet, there was a lot of interest in the (quality) film that was on offer, as well
as interest in projectors. There was even fresh camera film available on the day.

While recognising that many films printed on Eastman and similar stock, have
turned red or otherwise faded and are not of interest to most people, there is a
steady interest in quality color and black and white films. This would suggest that
there is still a good number of people with an interest in films and the equipment
on which to screen them.

The availability of so many titles on DVD and BluRay, provides the opportunity to
own a copy of a favorite title, for which a collector may have been searching for a
copy on film your years.

But does the ease at which DVD titles can be obtained either on line or in a store
make them less collectable, less saleable and less sought after than a similar title
on film.

Judging by the low prices (starting at $1.000 that DVDs were being offered for at
the Collectables Fair, this would seem to be the case.
