As we approach the end of another year, one tends to look back on the past 12 months
and think about what we were hoping to achieve during the year and what we actually
did achieve.

In the case of my cinema, I had two aims for the year. The first was to get the screen
curtains and masking operating automatically. Well, I achieved part of that - to the point
where it is all motorised and operating, but with manual button pushing and not
automated as I had intended.

The second aim was to fully sort and assess my film collection, in particular the silent
nitrate material. I intended to assess and digitise the older stuff as I went along. But as
any film enthusiast knows, once you start screening films, even for the purpose of
assessing them, the urge to watch and enjoy takes over - I have a long way to go!

Talking of nitrate film, it is amazing how much of it is still about. Much of it is in
excellent condition and runs through the projector without a hitch. In comparison, I
have lost track of the number of safety films, both 35 mm and 16 mm that have gone in
the junk bin this year. I believe vinegar syndrome may prove to be a worse ‘disease’
than color fade - at least with color fade you still have a film that can be screened - not
so with advanced VS.
As this is the December edition, which means that Christmas and the New Year are not
far away. May we wish every reader a happy Festive Season, and the best of health for
