        Who said film is dead?

The centre pages report on the last CATHS Cine Collectors’ Fair certainly doesn’t bear
out that thought. The attendance was up on previous years, with a good number of
younger people eager to make purchases, they also providing some of the more spirited
        bidding during the auction.
There were lots of quality items on sale, these included two 16 mm xenon projectors, a
very large selection of DVD and BluRay discs. As well, there were several boxes of
mixed 16 mm shorts at $5.00 each. I saw someone walking away with a LPP copy of a
Pink Panther cartoon, with a broad smile on his face.

        Kodak’s new Super 8 camera.
Creating quite a bit of interest on Internet forums at the moment, is the imminent release
of Kodak’s new Super 8 camera and film stock. Judging by the chatter, the price will be
well out of the range of the casual Super 8 film user, it seems to be aimed more at the
semi-professional who has a penchant for Super 8 filming.

        Vinegar syndrome (VS)
A lot has been written about this problem, but from my own experience, I am firmly
convinced that the use of metal reels and cans is a major contributor. I have been
checking a lot of 16 mm features films in recent times, and frequently find a two reel film
with one reel on a metal spool and the other on plastic. Often the film on the metal reel
has VS, while that on the plastic is fine. I have been progressively moving my films onto
plastic reels and sending the metal reels and cans to the recycler.
        Happy screenings,
        Mike
