Yet another year is all but over, and no doubt we are all thinking that the year has passed by so
quickly. It really does seems like only a few months back that I was scratching my head thinking
about a Christmas present for the other half of the Reel Deals team, and now that time is looming
up again.

The past year has seen a couple of interesting things happen. Most people are aware of “the vinyl
revolution” - the resurgence of music being released on vinyl records. A shop I walk past each
week sell records and it always has a few people in there checking the stock. Just recently, report
on the TV news of music again being released on audio cassette.
Then of course there is the 70 mm phenomenon - movies being released on 70 mm film. Just
recently the Sun Theatre in Melbourne ran a 70 mm festival, with six films on 70 mm being
screened to good crowds. Not to mention the reinstallation of 35 mm film projection equipment
by some operators. It seems old methods are not dead yet. I had best keep my Beta VCR at the
ready!

The lack of interest in CDs and DVDs is another interesting development. They appear to have
gone the way of video tapes, I note that some op-shops will no longer accept them as donations,
it seems they just don’t sell.

The passing of time has also seen many of the films in our collections fade away. In the long term,
it looks like Vinegar Syndrome is going to be a more insidious problem that color fade. At least
with color fade, the film is still watchable, whereas once VS gets a hold, the film becomes
unusable. VS can be held off by giving the film a good airing - what better way that to watch a
few films over the summer with family and friends.
