The Kodak “Sound Eight” Standard 8 mm Sound Projector, was
made in USA circa 1960. Prior to the introduction of Super 8,
Kodak and others produced projectors which would record and
replay sound, recorded on a magnetic stripe located on the
edge of the film outside of the perforations.
This was a big step forward for 8 mm users, as
several methods had been tried over the years.
Systems such as sound on disc and sound on
separate tape were a few. As well as being
“messy”, with the need for coupling devices be-
tween the projector and the other device, they all
suffered from synchronising problems.
By placing the magnetic stripe directly on the film,
sync between the sound and picture was no long-
er an issue.

popular “spaceman” lamp (8v 50w) of the day.
