Recommendations for advertising in REEL DEALS
To be effective, your advertisement should provide as much information as possible
on the item/s you are selling.
Films:
Apart from the obvious, (title, gauge, performers, etc) most potential buyers will
want to know the condition of the film. Questions such as “is it scratched”, “is the
color good” will be asked, to avoid unnecessary calls, this info should be stated in the
ad.
Also, bear in mind that many of the films from the 1970s to the late 1980s were
printed on Eastman Color film – this film is notorious for colou fade, resulting in a
pink or red faded image. Don’t rely on what the picture was like last time you
screened it – check the first few feet of the images to see what it is like now.
Equipment:
What we paid for projectors, cameras and accessories in the past is not a good
indicator of what they are worth today. Film equipment has gone down dramatically
in value, due to the introduction of digital projection, resulting in many people
disposing of equipment that is no longer wanted.
Pictures:
Including a picture of the items for sale, especially equipment, will generally make
selling easier – pictures are published at no extra cost.
Pricing:
Do not fall into the trap of checking prices on eBay as a guide. Many eBay advertisers
“try it on” with high asking prices hoping a gullible person will bite. Rechecking the
item at the end of the auction will generally find it to be unsold. In general Reel Deals
subscribers are well informed of relative values of films and equipment and expect
to pay accordingly.
Experience has shown that putting a price on an item, or “best offer over $xx” will
get more interest than advertising it with no price listed or suggesting an interested
person “make an offer”.
Don’t forget to specify who pays postage / freight, to avoid misunderstandings.
Seller Details:
The minimum requirement is your name (first name only if you wish), location (city
only if you wish) and a phone number. Communication by email is often the best
method of contact, but please remember, not everyone has email, so a phone number
is highly recommended.
