REEL DEALS

On this page in the last edition, I reported that a thought to be lost Hitchcock film
had been found in New Zealand.
This month, closer to home, a previously considered lost film Mamba has been found
and screened in Melbourne. An Adelaide collector had been storing the 8 (1000·)
reels of the film for some years, even though he had only the 35mm nitrate print,
which had no sound track. The film had been made as sound on disc film, using the
Vitaphone Sound on Disc System. It was found that in the UCLA Archive had the
complete soundtrack in their archive, restored from original Vitaphone sound discs.
The mute 35mm print was recombined with the sound discs and the restored film
was screened for the first time in 80 years at The Astor Theatre in Melbourne in
November. The film is historically significant, made in 1930 and being one of the
few full length films made in the 2 strip Technicolor process of the day.
Once again another piece of film history has been found thanks to the foresight of
a Film Collector.
To all REEL DEALS subscribers —
a Happy Christmas and a healthy New Year.
