Australia’s Lost Films –
                                             Search and Rescue

The Search was announced by the senior
curator of the National Film and Sound
Archive, Graham Shirley, at a session in the
Sydney Film Festival in June 2010. It was
then known as ALFSAR. Graham’s talk,
edited somewhat, will come up from a
google on ‘lost films big ideas’. Try it.

In 2011, the Search was expanded to cover
a couple of dozen items in sound as well as
film. An interesting list with many useful
links. A google on ‘collection most wanted’
will bring it up for you.

In November 2012, the chief curator, Meg
           Labrum, responded to questioning about
progress with an undertaking to give a
report each year, and did provide one for
publication in RD December 2012. In spite
of some prompting, no such report has yet
           appeared for 2013.

The main object of the Search, the 1955
           film CAPTAIN THUNDERBOLT, will appear
as a Key Moment of Australian Cinema in
the April issue of the online magazine
published from RMIT, Senses of Cinema
           (google that as one word).

Other news will appear from time to time in the website dedicated to the film
-- try ‘captainthunderboltfilm’ (all one word).
