In the past month, Barb and I have attended two collectors’ events. The New
Zealand Film Buffs’ Weekend in Wellington and the CATHS Cine Collectors’
Fair in Melbourne.
It is pleasing to see the attendances at these events and the enthusiasm of
those participating. Many enduring friendships have developed over the
years from the common interest that brings like minded people together.

On both sides of the Tasman, it was pleasing to see then number of younger
people in attendance at each event. This would seem to be at odds with the
often stated comment that film is only for us oldies.

It was also pleasing to see the interest, and in the case of the auctions, the
vigorous bidding for films of all gauges.

There was a bit of a puzzle noted at both events – where are all those
Super 8 films that were so prominent in past years. We are often told that
people have migrated to digital formats, if that is the case, what are they
doing with those unwanted films - there must be heaps under a bed
somewhere.

Also noted at both events was the lack of interest in used DVD and BluRay
discs. This situation is also seen at Op Shops. In fact some Op Shops won’t
even accept them, as they don’t sell.
It’s not that long ago we were told that film is finished and digital formats
would take over - I didn’t see any evidence of that that these events.
