Check Your Leaders!
A recent email from David Donaldson suggested this topic.
David had found a film in his collection with
had a blue leader which had become
distorted and twisted. Further examination
and a ‘sniff test’ indicated it was suffering
from vinegar syndrome. Fortunately the VS
had not migrated to the actual film.
I then started to check some of my films, and
it wasn’t long before I found one - my prized
print of The Train, with a green leader on
reel one exactly as David described.
In both cases, the VS had not spread to the
actual film, just the first few inches of the
countdown leader. But how long would it
take to contaminate the full reel, when it’s
sealed in a can with no ventilation.
And of course, don’t stop at checking the leaders, the tails could also be of the same material.

Shown is a Kodak model E projector. Made in the USA
1937. Made for 16 mm double perforation film, it incorpo-
rates a 50 mm f 1.6 lens and a 500 watt lamp. Kodak
produced several similarly designed projectors over the
next decade, for both 16 mm and 8 mm.
