Captain Thunderbolt
Location shooting was in New England (that's Armidale and Uralla NSW, folks) in
1951. Photography by Ross Wood. Sound recording by Robert Allen.
Released by Ray Films, Sydney, in 1955.
The scene above was shot in a studio in North Sydney, I was told, so cramped that there
was barely room for the camera. Grant Taylor and Charles Tingwell are fully kitted for
social evening of cards with gunplay. The associated shot from beneath the glass
tabletop (it must have been tight) has become one of the most famous in Australian film
history. The Ross Wood Award is given by Australian Cinematographers Society each
year to a young cinematographer.
Above comes from a British mini-lobbycard, 8x10 inches. A smudge indicates white-
out of Ray Films' logo (cheap!) Perhaps the Brit distributor did not bother with stills.
Recently obtained via a dealer in Los Angeles. Did the film achieve US release at all?
