THE TOOWONG (QLD) CENTENARY PRESENTATION 2003
Introduction:
I wrote this article 21 years ago to celebrate the value of capturing and preserving
cinema history – a role that for me has been – and still is at 93 – the passion of a lifetime.
I’m sure the readers of this magazine share that passion through collecting, preserving
and showcasing the great moments, memories and magic of cinema history. In that
process many use the amazing original artefacts of a century of cinema and beyond – a
vital role that all should celebrate!
This article illustrates the value of “History Alive!”
“GOOD EVENING YOUR EXCELLENCY" :
(or a Kenilworth lad to the Rescue)
"Good evening Your Excellency?" Yes - that
was the way one should address
Queensland’s new Governor, Her
Excellency, Quinten Bryce.
I had accepted an invitation to introduce a
special historical film evening titled
"Brisbane and the Time Machines" to
celebrate the centenary of the Brisbane
suburb of Toowong. This was to be held at
the Mt. Coot-tha Gardens Auditorium on
August 21st at 7.00 p.m. Then, as sometimes
happens things came unstuck and I found my
role in the show was suddenly expanded to
that of providing the entire evening’s
program - a three hour one man show, plus a
30 minute presentation of early cartoons for
the children’s program "A Hundred Years of
Cartoon Chaos".
