Notes for the Beginner
Does your cine camera give you the same feeling of simplicity that you
confidently obtain every time fro m your box camera 7 It ~~t certainly should.
Of course, there is a different approach to camera handling, but once that is
mastered and the following points thoroughly understood, the world of move-
ment and atmosphere is yours to capture and record at will.
• Familiarise yourself with the camera's components-view finder, start-stop
knobs, inching knob, footage indicator.
• Always nsur th t the camera is correctly loaded by following the
instruction suppli d with the camera.
• A littl thou ht b foro using the start knob will pay dividends.
• A cl n m< r p rture means a clean edge to your picture frames.
• N onfused over the three types of stock SS., V.F., and
chrom - lways ensure that the correct film is put into the
corr rf on b fore returning it to these laboratories for processing.
• Rom mb r n ov r- xposed reversal film-i.e. a film that is subjected to
too muc/1 ligh·l- ppears very light or thin on projection.
• A film that is und r- xposed-i.e., a film that is subjected to insufficient
light-appears v ry dark on projection.
Once the technique of Cinematography has been partially understood a
new world of design is op n to the camera user. It can renew memories, bring
laughter and tears andf.rovide records of lasting value. A cine camera correctly
used is simplicity itsel , but its power to assist us in our daily lives is infinite.
This is the first of a s ries of articles designed purely for the newcomer to
the fields of amateur cin matography.
