COVER PICTURE:
The LUX was Pathé’s final attempt to continue with their innovative “notched
title” system. Notched titles were first introduced along with the Pathé Baby
projector in 1922. Rather that having many frames all showing the same scene
or title, a notch or cutout on the edge of the film caused the projector to stop on
one or more frames. As a result the short 30-foot films first released could be
made to have a running time of several minutes. The LUX is the most
sophisticated of the Pathé projectors to utilize this system. Being motorized
everything happens automatically. Utilizing a higher wattage lamp than the
Baby, a special gauze filter drops down in the light path to prevent film damage.
[One of Pathé’s 30ft films ~A Tour of the Louvre ~ actually has a running time
of about 30 minutes. Apart from the titles, scenes involving paintings and other
inanimate objects have an associated notch resulting in the film stopping on the
frame showing each painting]
Projector shown is from the publisher’s collection.
