2014 – The end of an era
As we quickly approach the end of this year, a look back to mid year saw the
end of new releases on 35 mm film in Australia, and most parts of the world.
The industry has been well served by the 35 mm format – it is generally
accepted that the first public screening of films at which admission was charged
was by the Lumiere Brothers on December 28, 1895, at Salon Indien du Grand
Café in Paris – Not quite 120 years ago.
The 35 mm format underwent a variety of changes over the years. Starting off
in the silent years as a full frame format. The addition of a sound track in the
late 1920s reduced the area available for the image and sound brought an
increase in running speed from 60 feet per minute to 90. The introduction of
widescreen in the 1960s, meant the cropping of the top and bottom of the
image. Even a three perforation frame size was introduced, primarily for TV use.
Despite all of the variations through the years, it still remains that that original,
near 120 year old film could be be projected on the latest of the 35 mm projectors.
With the rapid changes in non-film recording and presentation that we have
seen over the past 40 odd years, one cannot but wonder if the present DCP
digital format will still be useable in 20 years from now - let a lone 120!
