Australia post will not accept parcels greater than 22 kg. They also “cube” the size,
which for large, light-weight items increases the cost, even though the parcel may not
be very heavy. I have not cubed any of the examples above, as films are quite dense
and cubing is not a factor.

The satchels have tracking included in the price, just remove the yellow tab from the
front and that number can be tracked on the Australia Post web site.
COD - Don’t even think about it!

The base rate for the recipient where payment for the postage and the goods is made
on delivery is - Regular Postage cost, plus the COD fee of $13.05. Also bear in mind,
should the addressee refuse delivery, there is an additional return fee of $18.90 to get
        your items returned to you.

        OTHER ALTERNATIVES
I recently had to send some 35 mm
        feature films to Northern Queens-
land. The films were packed into
        three boxes, each weighing around
the 20 kg mark. Australia Post quot-
        ed $ 255.00. An on-line freight com-
pany offer the same delivery for about $120.00 - a substantial saving! The delivery
took four days and was picked up from my home and delivered at the other end.

I made the booking via the TransDirect web site. They offer an on-line cost calculator
which gives you several options from different companies once you enter the freight
        details.

Just a few random quotes that I have checked include -

        Geelong to Perth 22 kg $55.00 (includes $1500.00 insurance) Post = $75.30
        Brisbane to Adelaide 20 kg $39.00 (includes $1500.00 insurance) Post = $73.30
        Sydney to Perth 20 kg $50.00 (includes $1500.00 insurance) Post = $75.30

It should also be noted that if you are sending multiple parcels as one shipment, the
second and third parcels become cheaper, as they all form one shipment. Whereas
with Australia Post, each parcel is regarded as a separate item and is charged accord-
        ingly.
