Canoes all on prints supplied by NFSA, and in quite good condition, although The Tracker had
many patches of crinkled up film here and there which made one twitch as it “rattled” through
the projector gate.
Rolf de Heer was also involved with Charlies Country and also on the program were two other
similar films Another Country and Still Our Country directed by Molly Reynolds. Both of these
directors were present at the various sessions, giving an intro prior and later on at some sessions
a Q & A session.
In the course of all that I got to meet and chat with both Rolf and Molly on various days and found
them to be very interesting to talk with. Rolf was highly entertaining during his intros, regaling
the large audiences each time with humorous snippets of his film making efforts and the problems
he encountered in doing so.
Following the final screening of Ten Canoes on the Saturday there was to be a DCP presentation
of Charlie’s Country, for that an NEC900C digital projector was brought into the venue. It was
supplied by Chris Kay of Rural Cinema at Capel WA.
Chris arrived with van load of gear at 2 pm and they “bumped” it all into the venue and set it up
at the viewing port for the 16 mm Fumeo machine which severely restricted easy access to the
lighting controls and as the photos show, it only just fitted into that space. Chris lined it up on
the screen, and for the same size ‘scope image at eight metres wide it was quite bright on the test
pattern. We hooked it into the sound system. After a couple of quick test runs of the three DCP
titles to be screened the PAF people were happy and Chris wandered off to do a school showing
elsewhere in Perth.
Guest at the screening, film maker, Rolf de Heer at the lecturn.
