CINEMA RE-EQUIPS FOR FILM PRESENTATIONS
As many of you know, I am also involved with the Cinema and Theatre Historical
Society of Australia (CATHS). CATHS members have their regular bi–monthly
meetings at the Sun Theatre in the Melbourne suburb of Yarraville.
The Sun Theatre recently concluded a year-long run of The Hateful Eight on
70 mm. This is believed to be the longest 70 mm season for the film in Australia.
More 70 mm film presentations are planned, commencing June 8 with Laurence
of Arabia. This will be a brand new print, recently struck from the original
negative, making it about as good as you can get in terms of image quality. That
will be followed in July by Dunkirk, also on 70 mm.
These presentations will take place in the Barkly auditorium, which is also being
equipped with a Bauer 16 mm 1600 watt xenon projector.
Another auditorium at the theatre has recently had a Bauer 35 mm projector
installed. It is fully equipped for DTS and Dolby digital. The first screening on
the recently installed machine was a couple of weeks ago, when a 35 mm print
of Blue Velvet was screened.
