Right: A "Happy Snap" of a
"home-made" 35mm
portable arc projector
knocked up by some
unknown travelling picture
show man in the 1920's
(now in Jack McDonald's
collection).
Below: Another "Happy
Snap " showing Charles
Chauvel with a "home-
made" 35mm camera used
to shoot "The Rats of
Tobruk" (1944). This is an
amazing piece of original
design for that era.
Normally cameras had to
be "racked over" for
focusing and accurate
framing of the shot, on
some cameras a slow and
cumbersome procedure. But on this one the camera body just rotated through 90 degrees on a central axis,
as shown, to bring a magnified viewing screen into the film plane for focus and framing. A unique Aussie
idea? I would very much like to know the origin and history of this camera, so if anybody out there knows of
it please contact me. (Photo by courtesy of Susan and Richard Chauvel-Carlsson).
