Albert Howell with the first spring wound
Bell & Howell 16mm camera.
At the time of seeing the Kodak tests,
Albert Howell had already made two Above and below: The Bell & Howell Filmo 70A 16mm
small film cameras and a projector to use camera. The first ever, spring powered camera - it could
17.5mm film. He called them Bell & be used without a tripod.
Howell “Filmos”. On viewing the Kodak
16mm tests he immediately returned to
his office and redesigned them to take
16mm film and transferred the name to
his new camera design 70A the first ever
spring powered camera – it could be hand
held and used without a tripod. The
projector too carried the name Filmo. His
16mm Filmo equipment was ready to go
as soon as Kodak released their new film
in February 1923.
Albert Howell and his company went on
to make the most outstanding range of
precision 16mm equipment including
film perforators, nonslip printers, heavy
duty splicing machines and winders –
every one set the “standard” for the
industry – a name they carry proudly.
Their Filmosound projectors along with
the RCA-Victors were also available in
1932.
