I would like to thank all those who contacted me to say congratulations on the 30
years of producing Reel Deals magazine.

Over those years, we have seen a number of friendships develop between collectors
who have met through the pages of RD. That is something I am very pleased about. In
the ‘bad old days’ collectors were a secretive bunch and you could not be part of the
scene unless you were ‘in the know’.

We have seen many changes in the collecting scene on the past 30 years, the
openness of film collecting as a hobby has been a change for the better.
One area of great concern though is the rapid deterioration of the prints we hold. It
seems that no gauge or type of film is exempt. Like many others, vinegar syndrome,
color fade and general deterioration has taken its toll on my collection. The effects
seem to creep up on you - maybe its all in the mind, but it seems that the films we
watched only a year or so ago with good color have now turned red or have
succumbed to vinegar syndrome.

It does make you ask yourself what does the future hold for budding film collectors.

Will we be the last generation able to collect films as they were meant to be - on film!
