sharply defined on the screen. Open the gate and brush or blow away all dust revealed;
by th!S means. Then defocus by turning the lens a quarter of a turn forward . This is
the a,pproximate position for sharp focus of the film image. Focussing is carried out
by turning the objective lens in its mount. Do not attempt to focus by merely sliding
the objective lens in and out of its mount; this will disengage the screw thread and
possibly damage it.
With the motor running, check that:
a. Lamp vertical and horizontal alignment is correct;
b. Reflector alignment is correct; and
c. Prism alignment is correct.
(For furthe r information on these adjustments, see section o n "Servicing").
Examine the screen image visually for colour bars. These can be removed by
attention to the above adjustments. Check that the movable fro nt gate slides freely
and does not bind on the fixed gate channel, that it is loaded by the spring in the gate
tension ad juster, and that the locking ring on this adjuster is tight. Ensure that the
film cradles do not fou l the sprocket within the film area; they ride on the sprocket
outside the film area, but are arra nged to clear the sprocket by .0075in. withi the
film area. Exam ine t he fi!m entry and exit rollers to see that they t urn freel y.
The projector can ;,ow be swicched off and a suitable film iaced f ;- further
checking. Lace the film according to the :acing diagram and ensure that t op and
bottom loops are of the correct size as denoted by t he guide lines. Check t hat t he
length of fi lm between the lower sp rocket and the take-up spool is t ight; if this is not
done, the take-up spool will snatch at the film until t he slack is taken up and will then
probably pull the fi lm off the bottom sprocket and possible damage it. The film should
be tightened by t urning the spool by hand ; when the film is tight, pull the front part
of the take-u p belt downwards an inch or two.
Whe n the fi lm is satisfactorily laced, switch on t he motor and lamp and focu s t he
scree n image. Check that the o bject ive lens t urns free! , but without slipping, and
that the screen definition is free from blurs. These may be caused by a di rty lens, or
that t he rake is excessive for the depth of field. (The dept h of fie ld with such a wide-
ape rtu re lens is very small , and .a gross deviation from a plane at rig ht angles to the
projector beam wi ll resu lt in parts of the screen image being out of focu s).
Rotate the fra ming control (t urn smoothly and SLOWLY) and note that the film
frami ng can be accomplished with t he masking control neither bindi ng nor slipping.
Note that the take- up is smooth, without snatching, and that the spool does not scrape
the film at an y part of its revoi Lition.
The remai ning points to check are that the door catches are aligned, the chassis
supports are half_-a-turn slack, and the clawcover and PEC covers are tight. Note:
THE ABOVE ADJUSTMENTS WILL HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT AT THE FACTORY
AND ARE SOLELY TO GUARD AGAINST POSSIBLE DAMAGE SUSTAINED IN
SUBSEQUENT HANDLI NG.
