As soon as the titles appear on the screen, check that the focussing is correct.
Adjus£ment may also be necessary to the framing of the image. This may be done by
·the framing knob behind the inching control. If the picture requires to be moved
·downwards, the knob should be turned anti-clockwise, and vice-versa. Turn .on the
"Sound" switch and fade up the sound by the volume control. Correct for the
required tonal balance by the tone control. (See also the section on "Showmanship").
At the end of the reel allow the film to run right off before switching off the motor.
SHOWMANSHIP
THE SAFAR "PEM" PROJECTOR is a scientific instrument which, if given proper
care and attention, will in turn give many years of efficient performance. This Instruc-
tion Manual should be studied carefully before using the projector and attention paid
to directions for operation. The following hints should be helpful in obtaining a
maximum -of efficient performance and pleasure from the use of the projector.
'Inattention to small but important detai Is of elementary showmanship wi II reduce
the finest film to little more than an animated magic lantern show.
Examine the film from time to time during its projection and allow the film
running from the exit roller to the take-up spool to run through the fingers LIGHTLY.
If any damage is developing, stop the projector at once and trace back through the
film path until the cause of the damage is found . Never leave a projector running
unattended and im mediately investigate any abnormal noise that occurs. A good
projectionist will immediately note any change in running noise; it is to be hoped that
.squeaks wiil never be allowed to occur, but the reason for a laboured sound, or a
" clattery" claw may be rather more obscure.
Remember that for every second the projector is allowed to run while damaging
film a further seven inches of film will be damaged , perhaps irretrievably: i.e., nearly
40 feet per minute !
A single damaged perforation will possibl y go through the projector without
mishap, but the risk of causing further damage if the claw fails to engage is too great
for the small amount of effort involved in making a repair and the damaged frame or
frames must be removed without delay. If the fi lm is returned to a renter without
such damage being remedied , then say so on the report sheet.
Do not attempt to join film by hand-always use a good splicer of reputable
accuracy. The film must be overlapped by one perforation only, and no more, and a
perforation must not be cut when joining. Scrape the emu lsion from one piece of
film after the ends have been cut square, and ensure that the clear side of the other
piece is perfectly clean and free from grease. The two pieces must be accurately
registered in the splicer and only sufficient film cement to make the join should be
used. Ensure the join is as clean and neat as possible before clamping down the
pressure plate in the splicer, and again check the register. A badly aligned splice will
