In the meantime the amplifier will have warmed up and is ready for use. Turn up-
the volume to a point from one-third to one-half maximum setting, switch on the·
exciter lamp by means of the "Sound" switch, and them move a slip of opaque pape r
between the sound-reader lens and the photoelectric cell aperture. A resultlnt plop-
from the loudspeaker will denote that the sound equipment is in order. If the plop
is weak or non-existent, turn up the volume control. If there is negligible o r n.:>·
improvement, turn the photoelectric cell polarising control clockwise by means of a
screwdriver. Do not turn this control farther than is necessary. It is prefe rable to
maintain this control at the lowest possiblE: level consistent with a satisfactory sound
output level. Advancement of this control beyond the point where a loud hissing is
heard implies instability and overloading of the photocell, which will sustain d1m1ge
if the control is not backed off to a point where the instability ceases.
Switch off both "Project" and "Sound " switches, but leave the amplifier switched.
on .
The fil m to be shown should then be placed on the front spool arm. Ensure that
it is correctly wound, with the lead e r outwards and the sprocket holes on the side
away from the operator. Pull off abo ut three to four feet of film for lacing. Insert
the film in the slot leading to the entry roller, and then lace as follows :
Open the upper film cradle with the third finger of the left hand and engage the
film perforations with the sprocket teeth. When correctly engaged, and not before
ge-ntly lower the cradle on to the film. Do not allow the cradle to spring into position .
Then , using the red line as a guide, leave a loop of film between the sprocket and the
top of the gate and insert the film into the opened . gate. When the film is aligned
properly, release the gate catch (underneath the objective lens housing) and allow the
front gate to come gently back. Do not allow the gate to spring back sharply, and
ensure that the film is not nipped by the gate. When the gate is closed gently pull
the film up and down to ensure that the claw teeth have been engaged by the perfo ra-
tions in the film . If not, rotate the inching knob until they are felt to engage.
Continue with a further rotation of the inching knob to ensure that the film
is feeding correctly and that the loop remains of the correct size. Note that the
inch ing knob revolves in a clockwise direction for forward film movement, i.e., in the
opposite direction to the sprocket. Make a similar loop, again according to the red
L line, between the bottom of the gate and the lower half of the sprocket in exactly the
same manner as on the top half. The remainder of the film should then be led out via
the exit roller to the take-up spool. The film is threaded through the slot in the spool
collar. The spool should then be rotated by hand until all the slack film is taken up
Note that the spool rotates in an anti-clockwise direction. Rotate the inching knot>
a few times to check lacing and that there is no slack loop between the bottom of the
sprocket and the take-up spool. If necessary pull down on the front of the spring
take-up belt to ensure that this length of film is tight. IMPORTANT: DO NOT
START THE MOTOR UNTIL THIS HAS BEEN CHECKED.
,.
Switch on the motor, watching the film, and observe that it is feeding correctly.
