jump at the join during projection, and the cycle of damage and (cpair will start all
over again. To complete the splice, blank out the join in the sound track with a
suitable opaque ink in the form of a small triangle. If a raw join passes th rough the
sound reader, a loud plop will result.
MAiNTENANCE
LUBRICATION : Ten drops of light machine oil such as that supplied in the
SAFAR Service Kit should be applied to ti--e oil container at the top of the projector
once a month for occasional use, and wee' ... · for more or less frequent use. Projectors
in continual daily use should receive two or three drops daily, before use. Do not use
oil excessively, do not use a heavie r grade than that recommended, and on no account
use paraffin derivatives. The motor, blower and camshaft run on sealed bearings
packed with grease, and will not requi re more than annual attention. On no accou.nt
attempt to apply any lubricant to the large fibre gear wheel behind the main flywheel.
If this is done the fibre teeth will distort, resu lting in uneven running and disto rtion
of sound reproduction. Do not apply oil to bearings externally and note that the
screw let into the end of the flywheel shaft-is always kept tight. If this is loose, oil
• from the bearings will escape into the amplifier. Ensure at all times that no loose oil
is allowed to accumulate anywhere in the projector or its cabinet. Remove the claw-
motion cover dwing maintenance periods and ensure that excessive oiling has not
resulted in rhe claw movement splashing the pris"'l . As with all lubrication systems
the rule should be "LITTLE-BUT OFTEN."
The type of screen surface to be used depends in the mai n on the t ype of hall or
room in which the projector is to be J < ~d . For a long narrow room or hall a glass- _______.

light when viewed from almost di rect h rront, but at angles exceeding 15-20° the
reflective power is less than othe r su , , .-e~. The silvered scree n gives a similar but
not quite so marked increase for frr- ~·11 , c:flection, but does not suffer so severe a loss
for angular reflection. For fai rly Wif ~ uditoriums, the matt white screen is preferable,
the reflective power varying by or · a few per cent at angles up .v 75-80°.
FILM DAMAGE
Run the projector as a fast idle speed for a few mi nutes after setting up and before
commencing a show so that it becomes t horoughly warmed up and runs smoothly
and constantly.
Ensure that all surfaces with which the film comes into contact are clean and that
all deposits of efT' ,dsion are removed. If left un removed the heat of the !amp -..-vi I I bake
this emulsi~., __ a hard scale wh ich will score and damage all film subsequently run
through th. ~--·~ ector. Never use a metal scraper to remove these deposits as this
will damat• the highly-polished surfaces. A bone or plastic scraper should be used;
a suitable s-:raper is included as part of the SAFAR Service Kit. Exam ine the proj,e.ctor
gate after every reel and clean if necessary. .:.
