RD reader, Graham Brown has
been given this old poster
advertising a performance of the
British Biograph in Launceston.
With the aid of the National
Library’s Trove website, we have
been able to narrow down the
performance to one of four,
th
commencing Saturday 29 March
1901.
Graham would like more
information on the British
Biograph – can anyone shed any
light on the machine and who
brought it to Australia.
The Trove web site reports (in part)
THE BRITISH BIOGRAPH. AT THE
ALBERT HALL
The British Biograph opened a short
season at the Albert Hall on Saturday
evening, and attracted a gathering
that, for such a night-the worst for
show purposes was really large.
The machine was located in the
centre of the hall, and an immense
screen, almost the proportion of the
stage, took the place of the curtain.
The pictures, large and realistic, were
exhibited by the perfected
mechanism of this wonderful
invention to the very best advantage.
The rapidity of the taking of the
original photographs from which the
films were produced reduces the
"flicker" that arises from the change
from one to another to a minimum,
and herein lies one of the great
features of this particular machine.
