As this edition of Reel Deals is being produced, the whole state of Victoria is
once again back in lock down.

After close to 90 days COVID free, we find ourselves back wearing masks, with
limitations on travel and being limited to small numbers of gatherings, and
importantly for the cinema industry, our cinemas are closed for the week.
After a disastrous 2020 for the industry, brought about not only by forced
closures, limitations on the number of patrons, and a general reluctance to
leave home. And to top it all off, the whole industry was starved of good product
to screen.
Some of the big production companies decided to stream their productions as
pay-to-view programs on the Internet, bypassing the usual theatrical release
period and going straight to TV.

Industry reports suggest even with no restrictions, attendance numbers are well
down, due primarily to a lack of good films to screen.

On the bright side, a number of new cinemas have opened in the past few
months, so it would seem there is confidence that things will return to normal
once we have this virus under control.
