MORE CIR SPLICERS
Mike Trickett
As Kev mentioned in his article, the Italian manufacturer CIR produced the popular self
perforating splicer, which became the ‘industry standard’ in the film era. Here are a few
of the not so common models they have produced over the years
Left: The CIR 9.5mm splicer. These and the
Super 8 splicer (below) are quite different in
design to the regular 16 and 35mm versions.
In both cases, the splicing tape is double
perforated and cut to twice the film width
when the cutter blade is closed. The film is
then wrapped around the film to cover the
other side of the splice.
Right: The CIR 17.5mm splicer - not the
Pathe 17.5mm format, unfortunately -
but designed for half 35mm full coat
magnetic film
Above: The familiar looking CIR - but with a
difference. This one appears to be the usual
16mm unit, but a close look at the splicing bed
shows it is designed to splice Super 8 film. It uses
the same double perforation and wrap around
to the opposite side of the film as those above.
