               '\!FILM APPRE~IATION~~

This much maligned subject is still misunderstood by so many people. It
would appear, judging by some conversations, that Film ~Pf>reciation means
looking at any professionally made production, preferably of vintage years and
then telling oneself how good it is and promptly forgetting the whole incident.
Simply speaking. Film Appreciation means understanding the medium of
the Screen and should start with understanding your own amateur films. Screen
the last film that you exposed and then ask yourself the following questions :
              (a) If the film is not titled-
                 1. Does it hold sympathy with the original item that sponsored your
making the film, e.g. "Summer Holiday".
                 2. Does it capture the atmosphere or is it just a filmic record.
              (b) Jf the film is titled-
                  1. Does the film live up to the title.
                 2. Could it be shown to a group of strangers and promote pleasure.
Appreciation of the screen is surely coming to grips with it, to understand
what it is trying to do. It must always be analytical and never self.satisfied-to
comprehend, to learn and to improve-need more be said.
So few of us really appreciate the true art of the Cinema, hence why we
are never really satisfied with our family films-(that is if we are truly honest
with ourselves). They seem to lack some evasive quality and yet it is impossible
to name and remedy that fault. Once we can realise the value of our cameras,
once we can realise the value of the screened result and can take these two
variables then we are well on the way to appreciating what +he Screen could,
do even if we cannot ourselves manage the supreme effort, but rest assuredJ
much pleasure will be gained in the struggle.
