The Weimar Standard 8mm Projector and More
In the past few months, I have been given two unusual 8mm projectors. Being well
known as a collector who can’t say no (by my family anyway!), of course I gratefully
accepted the two machine and added them to my already overflowing collection.
Firstly the Weimar
To say this machine is unusual in its design
would be an understatement. A better view of it
is shown at right. The single reel arm extends out
from the rear of the machine, it holds both the
feed and take-up reels, which are located
concentrically. The film is fed into and out of the
mechanism by a single double width sprocket.
Immediately to the front of that sprocket is a
strobe wheel with marking for 16 and 24 FPS for
accurate speed adjustment.
The projector is of all metal construction, with a
hinged door which can be closed during
projection to reduce noise from the already quiet
mechanism.
Threading the machine is a little unusual, but
easily done once the film path is understood.
A full view of the Weimar. Note the
built-in carry handle at the top. The reel
arm can be pushed back into the body
when not in use, making it a very
compact unit to transport.
