ANOTHER ODDITY …
THE EUMIG STANDARD 8mm SOUND PROJECTOR
Mike Trickett
Many collectors that I know of (myself included) started off producing and collecting
films on the 8mm gauge, later graduating to either 16mm or 35mm, or both!
The transition from Standard 8mm silent to Standard 8mm sound was not a jopurney
many collectors took, as Super 8 came on the horizon not long after, many skipped
the Standard 8 (only) phase, opting for the dual gauge (Std 8 & Super 8) machines. As
a result, Standard 8 (only) sound projectors are somewhat of a rarity.
The Eumig shown above is even more so, as it was manufactured in the valve era, the
electronics is all valve operated. It comprises two 9 pin dual section valves - for the
“techies” the preamplifier is an ECH81 (6AJ8) triode-heptode and the output is an
ECL84 (6GW8) triode-pentode. The 6GW8 come on the market in 1962, so that
somewhat dates the projector to the early 1960s.
